How to Unjam your Garbage Disposal

A jammed garbage disposal can be a frustrating problem, but with a little know-how and patience, you can often fix it yourself without calling a professional. Follow these step-by-step tips from Handyman Reed to get your disposal back in working order safely and effectively.

1. Safety First: Power Off the Disposal

Before doing anything, make sure to disconnect the power to your garbage disposal. This step is crucial to avoid injury.

Unplug the disposal from the wall outlet under the sink.

• If it’s hardwired, turn off the circuit breaker that powers the unit.

2. Check for Large Obstructions

• Use a flashlight to peer into the disposal chamber. Look for any obvious objects that might be causing the jam, like bones, silverware, or fibrous food scraps.

• Avoid using your hands! Instead, use tongs or pliers to remove the obstruction.

3. Use the Hex Key (Allen Wrench)

Most disposals come with a hex key (often stored under the sink or taped to the unit). This tool allows you to manually turn the motor and dislodge the jam.

Locate the hex key socket underneath the disposal.

• Insert the hex key and turn it back and forth. You’ll feel resistance initially, but keep working it until the motor spins freely.

4. Try the Reset Button

Once the jam is cleared, locate the red reset button on the bottom of the disposal.

• Press the button to reset the motor.

• Reconnect the power or turn the breaker back on.

5. Test the Disposal

• Run cold water through the sink and switch the disposal on.

• If it’s working smoothly, you’ve successfully unjammed it!

6. Prevent Future Jams

To keep your garbage disposal running efficiently, follow these tips:

• Avoid putting fibrous foods (like celery, onion skins, or corn husks) down the disposal.

• Cut large scraps into smaller pieces before grinding.

• Always run cold water while using the disposal to help flush debris through the pipes.
